How To Make Money From WordPress

WordPress is the most popular blog platform on the Internet, with both an online hosted version and a downloadable self installation version available. According to Builtwith.com , about 79% of blogs use WordPress. With its wide adoption, there’s a big opportunity for earning money with WordPress.

Earning from Wordpress falls into two categories. The first is using WordPress as it is intended and creating a website or blog from it, then monetizing that blog to earn money. The second is tapping into the vast market for programming, designing and customizing websites or blogs for WordPress. If you have design and/or programming skills, you can tap into the huge number of site owners using WordPress and address their various needs.

Here are ways you can make money from WordPress:

1. Starting your own WordPress blog. The first way to earn from WordPress is to use it for what it is intended – for creating and running a blog.

The main way blogs can earn money is through displaying ads, whether banner ads, text ads, and other forms of advertising. Google Adsense and Chitika are two of the best ad networks today where publishers with WordPress blogs or websites can apply to earn money from displaying ads.

You can also earn money through internet marketing, or helping WordPress users market and promote their blogs or websites on the Web.

2. Programming and Designing a WordPress blog or website. Website owners and bloggers using WordPress have a wide variety of needs, particularly at the creation of their websites or blogs.

* Designing templates for WordPress. There are businesses out there that focus on creating themes or templates for WordPress. If you have a real knack for programming and designing, you can make good money creating paid WordPress themes. An example is Studiopress http://www.studiopress.com, which offers individual themes starting at $59.95, or the pro-plus all-theme package for $249.95 that gives you access to all their themes plus support. However, to succeed in this business, you need to keep up with the changes of WordPress, constantly offer great-looking templates for your customers, and be proactive in assisting customers with their themes. Studiopress has an active forum where customers ask questions about theme customizations, and the developers as well as freelance programmers working on their themes respond to the inquiries.
* Customizing themes and templates for WordPress. If you don’t want to become the next Studiopress, you can make money by working with these theme creators to customize their themes based on clients’ preferences. Customization work include tweaking the theme design according to the page features and elements the clients want, changing the colors, or even taking the layout to the next level.StudioPress, for example, has a list of Recommended Designers who are all freelance programmers and web designers with proven track records of working with StudioPress themes. Customers can contact and hire any of these designers to help with any customization work that they need on the StudioPress themes that they have purchased.

* Designing headers. A key element in the design of a blog or a website is its header. There are WordPress site owners who will use the templates as is, but want a customized header to give their website or blog that stamp of individuality and uniqueness. Custom headers can go anywhere from $100 to $500, or even more, depending on the complexity and design of the header.
* Converting existing website or blog to WordPress. You can also make money by helping those currently running their blog or website on a different platform convert to WordPress. Potential customers include those running Blogger and other blog platforms, those who have a static website wishing to convert to a database driven site using WordPress, and those running other content management systems such as Drupal or Joomla. Majority of the work will be in moving the content, redirecting the URLs, and search engine-proofing the new WordPress site to prevent loss of traffic and rankings.
* Adding ecommerce functionality to WordPress. WordPress is primarily a blog platform, but with tweaking and the use of plugins, many small business owners are using their WordPress-driven sites into ecommerce stores.
* Creating or customizing WordPress plugins. Plugins extend the functionality of WordPress in almost limitless ways. You can create plugins for WordPress, customize plugins to work with the clients’ blogs or websites, or configure the plugin to ensure compatibility with other plugins being used. A recent job posting in eLance for $1,000-$5,000 is looking to hire a programmer who can create an advanced banner plugin for WordPress in order to segment text and banner ads

Earn From Photoshop

With the growing prominence of digital photos, photo-editing software like Adobe Photoshop has grown in usage and popularity. If you have mastered Photoshop and developed strong editing and creative skills using this software, those skills can open career and freelancing possibilities for you. Mastering the visual graphics realm of Photoshop can provide you with livable income, whether you want to do it on a full time basis or as a part-time business.

Here are 5 ways you can earn through freelancing using your Adobe Photoshop skills:

1. Start a photo editing service. One possible business you can start is to offer digital picture editing and image optimization services. You basically take the client’s less than perfect digital photo and turn it into a masterpiece. As a “photo doctor,” you can remove unwanted people and objects from a photograph, insert someone or something into a photograph, repair over- or under-exposed photos, convert colored photos to black and white (and vice versa), or do something as basic as removing red eye from photos. You can also do color correction, background change, contrast adjustment, and size enlargement. The key is to offer high quality work at reasonable prices.

2. Start a photo restoration service. You can also start an image restoration service to improve the quality or repair damaged/old images, including faded, stained, torn, missing pieces, bad color, water-damaged photos. Historical societies, museums and even families with old family pictures and photographic heirlooms can use this type of service. You can correct color, remove background images, or remove other people in the image. Other services can include copying old photographs, even those that do not need to be repaired.

3. Start a graphic design business. You can market yourself as a graphic artist whose main expertise is Photoshop editing. The freelance site eLance.com , for example, has about 843 new jobs posted looking for Photoshop experts. One job posting, whose payment range is from $1,000-$5,000, comes from a wedding stationary store looking for graphic designers to create product images for their ecommerce store. Others are looking for assistance in brochure design, digital image editing, photoshop mockup of homepage of new website, removing background images, cover and page template for printed catalog, among others. You can edit images professionally and prepare them for any output.

4. Start a T-shirt design business using your Photoshopped images. Another option is to start a t-shirt design business from images you create using Photoshop. Using Photoshop, you can create cool artwork that will work very well for t-shirts and other apparel. T-shirts are one of the world’s most popular apparel products and your originality, creativity and skill in using Photoshop can allow you to create unique designs for your t-shirt business.

5. Start a greeting card business. The images you create via Photoshop can also be used to create greeting cards. You can create specialty cards with contemporary vibe; create abstract and graphical images, and cards that use special typographic design. You can sell your creations to established greeting card companies, or start your own line of greeting cards. Read the Starting a Greeting Card Business for details on how to start your own greeting card business.

Local freelancers flourish online

Imagine a job where you yourself decide when and how long you will work. Where you don't have to wake up early in the morning and rush through the tiring traffic jam to reach office within the stipulated time and where there is no boss breathing down your neck all the time. Add to that, a great salary. This isn't wishful thinking, but now a possible reality.

The mighty internet has once again shown its worth in bridging the gap between employer and employee, living seas apart. Today, with the help of the internet, a person residing in Bangladesh can work for companies all over the world virtually as if he were physically there, a phenomenon that is termed as Outsourcing or Freelancing.

Freelancers in Bangladesh today are earning thousands of dollars from the comfort of their own homes. Faisal Farrukh, a Dhaka-based freelancer looked to freelancing simply to explore and develop his own creativity. Today, he is providing back-end support, virtual assistance-ship and content development to numerous foreign companies, and now, it is more than just a hobby for him. With the amount money he makes, why would he need a nine-to-five job? “There are numerous companies out there in need of labour at low cost and less time”, he says, “These companies or 'contractors' , who, maybe, are short of time to look for a real assistant, may prefer to employ a virtual assistant who can manage their workload for them within the stipulated time. This is where freelancers come in. Still others may need freelance writers (or content developers) to write up a press-release for them. The possibilities are unlimited”.

For many, the idea seems far-fetched. The idea of something so simple and easy is sometimes difficult to digest. Many believe that one has to be super-qualified for this. However, there are a multitude of projects, which do not always require a Computer Science graduate. Shahriar Jahan, who was awarded as a freelancer at the recently concluded BASIS SoftExpo, began freelancing doing data entry jobs, but is now expanding his horizon by taking up other projects like web research, marketing and search engine optimization. He urges beginners to not use these projects for testing. “Unless you are sure you are up for it and have the time for it, you should not promise your services. Since, these are real companies, with real needs. Doing so can cause them a lot of hassle”.

It is a well known fact in Bangladesh, that if one is to do big things in life, he or she has to come to Dhaka, the Metropolitan city of dreams. If more Bangladeshis took to freelancing, the population pressure over Dhaka would also reduce. Shabbir Hossain, winner of the BASIS Award, is based in Rangpur and has been freelancing since Grade 9. Today, his workload has expanded so much, that he is working with six others.

After passing his Honors, five years ago, Enayet Husain Rajib started looking for work online, when he stumbled across the website scriptance.com. “There are numerous more such websites, such as www.odesk.com and www.freelancer.com. I started my job with less pay, but tried to do more and more projects, just so that my ratings on the site increased. Sometimes I even worked for free. But soon enough, as predicted, once the number of projects done in my portfolio increased, I got bigger projects and higher pay. In all, I needed about a year to get established”.

But many are skeptic about the reliability of these companies. What if I don't get paid for my hard work? “The solution to this,” explains Enayat Husain, “is the escrow system. The way escrow works is it puts money in a placeholder which is not accessible to the freelancer. This allows the freelancer to know that his contractor has the cash needed to start the project. Once money is placed in escrow the contractor is unable to cancel the escrow money or retrieve his money. Then, the contractor will only have the option to release the money to the freelancer while the freelancer will only have the option to cancel the escrow, thus returning the money to the contractor. This shared responsibility protects both parties from being ripped off.” Enayat Husain works on web application development and modification projects using PHP, Joomla, etc.

Mohd. Solaiman, a graphic designer, uses his artistic skills in designing web-pages and doing 2D and 3D animations, using Flash, Corel Draw, etc. “There is a lot of scope in this field”, he says, “However, time is very important. Failure to make the delivery on time will cause the country to suffer a bad reputation. Earlier, Indian freelancers were preferred, however, now, one can find numerous job projects that mention 'Filipinos only'. Bangladeshis should create such a name that someday, the words 'Bangladeshis only' can be seen on these websites”.

The main barrier that most Bangladeshi freelancers face is in the mode of payment. Due to the absence of Paypal system in Bangladesh, it sometimes becomes a hassle for the freelancers to get their payment, as they have to depend on relatives living abroad or have to go through complex procedures for their rightful earning.

However, barring the slight inconvenience, this is also a great way for qualified women who stay at home to develop their skills and earn some money too. Be it website content for a tourism website, proof-reading, creating a PowerPoint presentation to excel sheet data entry, the possibilities are unlimited.

How Much Can You Earn With AdSense?

Google does not disclose exactly how much you'll earn per ad that is clicked.
The commission you receive per click depends on how much advertisers are paying Google for the particular ad. You will earn a share of that amount. I've heard of earnings anywhere from 2 cents to $15 per click.
So it is logical to believe that keyword phrases like debt free, employment, make money, mp3, sex, etc. will earn you more per click since these are highly competitive keywords that are searched for quite a bit on the web.
Advertisers generally pay more for popular terms because they are searched for more.
Even though Google will not reveal how much you are earning for each ad that is clicked from your site, you can still login to your account at any time and see the total amount of revenue you've generated that day, week, month, year, etc.
For example, if you see that you've made $12.60 today from 9 clicks then you can calculate that your average click-thru commission was $1.40 per click. That's as detailed as their stats will get. Also remember, that's only an average. You won't know how much each specific ad brought in.
The amount you'll earn also depends largely on the amount of targeted traffic you receive to your own site, how well the ads match your audience's interests, the placement of the ads on your pages, and of course the amount you receive per click.
Ideally, you should create a site on a topic you know a lot about. That way you'll have a much easier time creating a generous amount of content on that subject.

Google Adsense

Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages. All this is managed through a program they call AdWords.
Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by displaying these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.
This program is called AdSense.
Every website owner should at least consider the program. Even if your site is just for information purposes, you can still participate and make decent money with AdSense -- or at least enough to fund your website.
So if you are one of those people that doesn't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some.

What is PageRank?

Back in the dim, dark ages of the internet, (1998), Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented an article at the World Wide Web Conference outlining a new way of analyzing websites based on their link relationships. They called this PageRank (based, believe it or not, on Larry Page's surname, not for the fact that it ranks web pages), and it still forms the basis for Google's search algorithms.
The fundamental idea of PageRank is: if we link to your site, that is like us making a recommendation for your site. We're saying your site is good. The more people you have recommending your website, the better your website must be. It's democracy in action — many people can't be wrong!

Our Guide to PageRank

These are some of our observations and recommendations when it comes to working with PageRank and things we've found that have worked for us, or have shown up in our tests.
